Ten Shekel Shirt

Bio

LAMONT HIEBERT - Artist / Activist

Lamont's life and music emanates both art and action. His melodic rock style earned him a #1 hit song (Ocean, 2001) and his work as an abolitionist is helping transform the lives of former child slaves. For those with an ear for stylish melodies and a passion for justice Lamont is a welcome change.

As the front man and creative force for Ten Shekel Shirt, Lamont wrote and co-produced the album MUCH in 2001. With songs like Meet with Me, Come Away and Ocean the album became a fan favorite for its transformative edge, selling over 130,000 units.

Lamont and the band followed up their successful debut project with RISK; a radio-ready rock album with a soul. "With an astonishing maturity, RISK is certainly a statement of the bands talent and staying power." Relevant Magazine. Due to differences with their record label and despite rave reviews the album was shelved immediately after it came out. Thankfully, RISK will no longer remain one of the best albums you've never heard. Instead it will be re-released to coincide with Lamont's solo debut album due to come out in mid 2007.

Over the past 7 years Lamont has not only pursued his musical ambitions but also the hopes and dreams of children exploited and enslaved in the global sex industry. Along with raising awareness for organizations such as the International Justice Mission, Lamont has gone beyond using mere words by co-founding Justice for Children International. www.jfci.org

"We work to abolish child sexual exploitation and trafficking while restoring those who have already been victimized," Lamont explains. "In high-traffic regions such as SE Asia we are training caregivers and multiplying safehomes so that more exploited children can be rescued and restored. We are also funding targeted prevention efforts such as wells in areas where children are being abducted on their way to fetch water by human traffickers. Now these children are closer to home and are attending school for the first time," he adds.

This is no small problem as UNICEF estimates that 1 Million children every year are forced into the global sex industry. With the modern-day abolitionist movement against child prostitution and other forms of slavery on the rise, Lamont is emerging as a leader. After raising awareness on a college tour in 2004, the US State Dept's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons contacted Lamont to let him know they had heard about his efforts and that he was, "doing a good job."

Lamont's Solo Debut Album As a result of Lamont's passion for justice, his new songs are both poetic and powerful covering themes that bring healing to survivors of abuse and a confrontational spotlight to abusers and bystander's. Although at least half of the songs revolve around the children he serves the rest of the songs on the album are, as usual, well crafted, personal and transformative. Lamont will finish up in the studio in early 07 and will be back on the road for his upcoming Art and Action Tour.
